Two classic novels from the mid 20th Century: The Big Sleep, one of the most influential detective novels of all time, needs no introduction from me, Hangover Square though is a lost classic of unrequited love & alienation, the best book I've read this year. It's a page turning thriller of sorts, a snapshot of seedy Earl's Court just before the outbreak of WW2. It's also desperately poignant. Read the review of The Big Sleep from
